FRANKIE MIÑOZA burned the fairways anew yesterday but his effort fell short as he could only rally up to fifth spot at the close of the Volvo Masters of Asia at the Thai Country Club in Bangkok.
The 45-year-old Miñoza, aching to regain the touch that gave him numerous titles in the rich Japanese Circuit three years ago, had a 72-hole total of 11-under 277 to finish nine strokes behind winner Shiv Kapur of India who came through with a 67 for 268 in this final event of the Asian Tour.
Miñoza, who trailed the leaders by as much as 11 strokes after a second round 74, started his rally in the third round when he sank eight birdies against a lone bogey for a 65, the best score for the third round.
Yesterday, Miñoza played a bogey-free round and had birdies on holes No. 2, 4, 13 and 15 to win the $23,100 (roughly
R1.25 million) fifth place purse.
Angelo Que, the other Filipino in the cast, closed out with a four-over 76 to finish in a four-way tie for 44th spot at 295.
Finishing second was another Indian, Jyoti Randhawa, who carded a 69 for 270. Joint third placer was Marcus Both of Australia at 272 while Chawalit Plaphol of Thailand came in fourth at 275.
