Koreans flex muscle

   

TOP SEED Koreans Hee Seok Chung and Hee Sung Chung breezed past locals Richie Cunanan and Frederick Morgan, 6-0, 6-1, yesterday to lead the first round winners in the men’s doubles of the 23rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open Tennis Championships in Paco, Manila.

The Korean pair, who won the Korea Open last year, will meet compatriots and third seeds Oh Seung Hoon and Bum Seo Yung, who blasted locals Ed Angelo Diez and Perene Alina, 6-0, 6-0.

In other matches, Emerson Ocampo and Marvin Serito rallied past Juancho Botor and Nante de Castro, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, Nino Salvador and Joshua Tan Ho outplayed Gabby Remigio and Dennis Sta. Cruz, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, while the father and son tandem of Russell Arcilla Sr. and Russell Arcilla Jr. prevailed over Angelo Rabina and Jesus Rayel, 16, 6-3, 6-2.

Also advancing to the next round were second seeds Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro, fourth seeds Adelo Abadia and Alexander Lazaro, fifth seeds Chimiel Mantua and Junjun Toledo, and seventh seeds Rolando Ruel Jr. and Brian Poturnak.

Arcilla and Tierro outclassed Marco Lua and Francis Venzon, 6-1, 6-2, Abadia and Lazaro won by default over Jason Benitez and Jomar Arcilla, Mantua and Toledo blanked Juv Alban and Nic Fernandez, 60, 6-0, while Ruel and Poturnak defeated Dennis Perida and Henry Vellesco, 6-3, 7-3.

Other first-round winners were Rey Laroya and Jaime Solon over Federico Balorio and Christopher Limpahan, 7-5, 6-2, Luisito Clores and Allan Hermano over Jake Saberon and Antonio Sagansay, 6-3, 6-1, Joseph Arcilla and Rocky Paglalunan over Aldrin Geluz and Delmar Miranda, 6-3, 7-5, Dustin de Torres and Dennis Sianson over Butch Mejico and Inigo Caguiron, 6-2, 6-1, Ricardo Solon and John Soques over Gerald Abacan and Gino Bautista, 6-3, 6-3, Gilbert Estrada and Ruel Rubillar over Alfred and Aaron Casareo, 6-0, 6-1, Hanky Lee and Charlie Niu over Lorenzo and Beeyong Sison, 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, top seed Hee Seok Chung takes on qualifier Charles Baba at 1 p.m. today in the second round of the men’s singles.

Other matches pit No. 2 Patrick John Tierro against Joseph Arcilla, No. 3 Korean Seong Yong Bum against Antonio Sagansay III, No. 4 Johnny Arcilla against Kyle Dandan, No. 5 Rolando Ruel Jr. against Korean Lee Chan Hoon, No. 6 Chimiel Mantua against Korean Chung Hee Sung, No. 7 Adelo Abadia against Emerson Ocampo, and No. 8 Alexander Lazaro against Joel Palao.
