MULTI-TITLED KENNETH San Andres of the Revtex team added two awards to his crammed trophy cabinet recently by virtually winning the Expert Open and Expert 125 titles of the Red Horse Beer-Smart Buddy Speedfest at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
San Andres, last year’s Rookie of the Year scored a four-game sweep of his Expert Open and Expert 125 assignments to claim unreachable leads from a pursuing pack that included his teammate Geovani Leyva.
So dominant was San Andres that his rivals trailed him by more than an entire lap in the four occasions that he won pulling away, as he solidified his status as the country’s best young rider in the Speedfest, which is one of the legs of the Philippine national Motocross Championships sanctioned by the National Motorcycle Sports and Safety Association (NAMSSA).
"Kenneth’s one-week training in Murrieta, California in the US under famed former world motocross champion Jim Gibson paid off. He learned a lot from that valuable stint, and it was obvious from his performance that he was able to use his new learnings to the hilt, like how to start and finish properly," said his father-coach Jun-Jun San Andres.
San Andres, who is backed by Caltex Revtex, Oakley, HJC Helmets, Bridgestone, Renthal, Alpine Star, Fox, UFO and JBS Motorcycle Shop, was at his best in the Expert Open, where he was able to overtake his rivals on his way to the finish while they were still in their own penultimate lap.
A 1st year IT student of the Manila Central University, San Andres also emerged as the sixth-best overall rider in the recent FIM Asia-Pacific Motocross Championships, a testament to his skills as the future of Philippine motorcross.
"That in itself is already a huge achievement, considering his youth and the quality of the Asian field," said Jun-Jun San Andres. "I expect him to improve as the years pass by."
San Andres, who hails from Valenzuela City, will formalize his claim to the Expert Open and 125 crowns when the Mike Potenciano-organized Speedfest holds its final leg on Saturday at the Palo alto Racetrack in Baras, Rizal.
