Be ‘Spellbound’ this holiday season

Anine-minute sneak peek at "Spellbound’s" Human Design act and it’s more than enough to convince people in Gateway Mall, Cubao last Wednesday afternoon that "Spellbound" is, indeed, the best magic show of this generation.

Composed of three men doing various acrobatic poses in utterly calculated and slow movements and formations, the crowd was treated in nothing short of a superhuman showcase of talent, tolerance and super strength. Then again, the Human Design act performed by Miguel Soler, Slawek Kielbasinski and Krystof Suskek is just one of the many highlights of "Spellbound," a repertoire touted to be a climax-charged event.

Those who’ve seen the two-hour spectacle—which is ongoing at the Araneta Coliseum until Jan. 14—vouched for the show to be indescribable; just as magic is in its nature, no adjectives can justify the show save for experience that goes with watching it.

We were surprised to know that the director behind "Spellbound’s" cast of 44 magic is a woman, Las Vegas-based Heidi Fairbairn who revealed to Manila Bulletin that it only took a short period of time for the cast to master the acts in the show. "We rehearsed the show for three weeks in Vegas before we went here and we’re overwhelmed by the response of the Filipino people," she told the Bulletin at Pizza Hut Bistro in Gateway.

On Christmas day alone, the organizers and "Spellbound" people were greeted such a pleasant surprise in the form of a jam-packed Big Dome and sold out seats on its first day. "And the tickets that the audiences are buying are that of the main seats. We knew that there is a market for this show in the Philippines but we didn’t know that it’ll be this big," Fairbairn continued. The Philippines is "Spellbound’s" first and only stop in Asia. However, if neighboring countries will be interested, Fairbairn’s group will be glad to share the acts and spread the magic.

"Spellbound" has won the most prestigious magic show awards in the US: Best Magic Revue of the Year and the International Magic Award’s Best Magic Production Show of the Year. Aside from the out-of-this-world magic from Vegas’ famous duo The Majestix, "Spellbound" features original jaw-droping stunts and musicals.

Although none of the cast is Filipino, Fairbairn said she has known Filipinos to be very talented singers because our very own Zhar Santos a.k.a Sharon Galvez of last year’s "American Idol" works in her Las Vegas bar. "She is a powerful singer that when she performs, our audiences keep on asking if it’s taped and we always‘say no, it’s her voice and you better believe it’s really coming from that petite girl.’"

As far as the group’s stay in the Philippines is concerned, Fairbairn has only wonderful words to bring back home about the Filipinos. "Anywhere we go, the people here are so friendly and very helpful that we don’t mind working during the Holidays for them."

("Spellbound" shows are happening everyday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. until Jan. 14. To avail of "Spellbound" 30% ticket discounts, dine in at major Pizza Hut branches.)
