ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — A Philippine-born alleged sex den woman worker hired a hitman to kill her Filipino husband in Manila so she could claim A400,000 dollars (US1,000; euro245,000) in life insurance, a prosecutor told a court Friday.

Jennifer Remigio, 30, is charged with conspiring to kill Michael Remigio, 30, who was shot to death as he sat in a car near a suburban Manila bar in October last year, prosecutor Carmen Matteo told a magistrates court in the southern city of Adelaide where the couple had lived.

Jennifer Remigio is of Philippine origin although her nationality was not detailed in court.

Remigio, who faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted, has not entered a plea to the charge. She was denied bail Friday and remanded in custody until her next court appearance in February.

The mother of a seven- year-old daughter and four-year-old son was arrested on Dec. 14 in Sydney. The couple had lived in Australia for about 10 years.

Matteo alleged that Remigio and some family members hired a hit man to kill her husband while he was in the Philippines visiting his family.

Matteo claimed that Remigio wanted to collect on a A0,000 life insurance policy taken out on her husband two weeks before his death. The court did not hear whether the insurance company paid the claim.

Matteo alleged that Jennifer Remigio’s brother, who was not named in court, took the husband and two of his friends to the Nayon Cafe on Oct. 13 last year. Remigio was shot in the early hours of Oct. 14 after leaving the bar, while the defendant’s brother remained at the bar on the pretense of paying for drinks, Matteo said.

Matteo said Jennifer Remigio, who lived in Adelaide until August this year, when she moved to Sydney to allegedly work as a prostitute, was the sole beneficiary of the life insurance policy.
