In meeting new challenges in this brand new year, it would be wise for us to pause a moment to examine how we fared in the year that is now relegated to the dustbin of our nation’s history.
No doubt about it, 2005 had been a very frenetic year for the men and women of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) as we took on the various roles, including as a beacon of public service for local government units, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and all the other government agencies mandated to promote public safety.
Never has the DILG been more involved than right now in stopping all forms of lawlessness and criminality, whether they be kidnapping, carjacking, smuggling or robberies. I am very proud that the DILG had ceased to be a paper-moving arm of government since we have advocated a "hands-on and ears-to-the-ground" approach in fulfilling our mandate.
I am positive that 2006 will bring forth new obstacles to our country’s growth and prosperity. But the DILG and your Secretary Angelo Reyes are undeterred. We will take the bull by the horns if only to ensure a peaceful and economically conducive 2006 for all of us.
Manigong Bagong Taon po sa inyong lahat!
