Floods swamp Caraga; 64,000 evacuated

BUTUAN CITY — As relief and round-the-clock repair of destroyed bridges and roads went into high gear on the third day, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Caraga reported that damage to agriculture and infrastructure has risent to R62,164,822.

The number of flood victims also grew to 14,757 families or 64,153 persons, all of them temporarily sheltered at various evacuation centers in the region.

According to DSWD and OCD, the hardest hit was Surigao del Norte and the city of Surigao.

The flashflood was caused by heavy rainfall that started on December 21 and only ended on December 28.

The latest fatality report, was identified as Monica Aguilar, who drowned in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte.

The fatalities now number four.
