Two earthquakes had been recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) yesterday, including a tremor reportedly felt in some parts of the Metro Manila area.
The first earthquake occurrence was recorded by seismologists at 8:09 a.m., with its epicenter recorded at 18 kilometers (kms.) north 23 degrees west of Butuan City.
The temblor, believed to have originated from the Philippine Fault Zone (PFZ) East Mindanao Segment, registered a 3.5 magnitude. Intensity II was felt in Butuan City, seismologists reported. Butuan City is the capital city of Agusan del Norte located in Region XIII.
Meanwhile, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake also jolted Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro at 10:40 a.m. yesterday.
With its epicenter located at 53 kms. north 80 degrees west of the said area, seismologists said that the source of the temblor possibly came from the movement along the Manila Trench.
Intensity two was also reported in the City of Manila, where the feast of the Black Nazarene was being held in Quiapo Church; in Tagaytay City, Puerto Galera in Mindoro and in Sucat, Parañaque City.
Seismologists however said that no damages nor aftershocks are expected because of the temblor.
The Butuan and Mamburao temblors are said to be the second and third earthquake occurrences to be recorded for this year, respectively.
The first temblor to jolt the country this year was the Antique earthquake on New Year’s day, which occurred at 1:30 a.m.
Recorded at 3.14 magnitude, the first temblor for the year rocked San Jose de Buenavista town, the capital of Antique.
