Philippine National Police Manila Police District 105th Anniversary
spacer

THE Manila Police District (MPD) is one of Manila’s landmark institutions. It has its own history and helped reshape Old Manila into what it is now today. Giving the public the highest level of performance in maintaining peace and order, it has helped make Manila the premier city in the Philippines. This is why the officers and men of the MPD have been called "Manila’s Finest."

The MPD was known as the Metropolitan Force of Manila (MPFM) when it was created by the Philippine Commission on January 9, 1901, through Act No. 70. The MPFM was tasked to police and maintain peace and order in Manila and neighboring towns. It was reorganized on July 31, 1901, to become one of the departments of the City of Manila and was called the Manila Police Department (MPD).

The need for nationwide coordination and supervision of police led to MPD’s integration with the Integrated National Police (INP) in 1978. In 1991, MPD was renamed Western Police District (WPD) by virtue of Republic Act No. 6975 which created the Department of Interior and Local Government. It was one of five districts under the Metropolitan Police Force, the others being the Northern, Central, Eastern, and Southern Police Districts.

The revival of the Manila Police Academy as the WPD Training Center to recruit young men and women eager to serve the country and the launching of Smart 700 PITText Hotline service stresses the will of WPD’s officers and men to do their best in fulfilling their duty to serve the public.

On July 20, 2005, the Western Police District was reestablished as the Manila Police District to stress that the police office is part of Manila, the city where it provides essential police services. The department was renamed so that Manileños can easily identify with its police force and provide the public with easier access to its services.

We congratulate the Manila Police District headed by Chief Supt. Pedro E. Bulaong and the other Officers and the Men and Women of the MPD on the occasion of their 105th Anniversary. We wish them all the success in their endeavors.
