DAVAO CITY—No matter how tempting a hot seafood soup may be during these cold rainy days, don’t succumb to the temptation. No matter how affordable a potful of shellfish may seem compared to fish or meat, stay off "tahong" (mussel) and other shellfishes.
Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Director George Campeon for the Zamboanga Peninsula aired the warning last week after several public markets in the cities of Davao and Panabo were discovered selling tahong that were positive of the red tide toxin.
With the incessant rains and flashfloods, floodwaters constantly pour into the sea and with these come the activation of toxin-producing algae or the red tide, Director Campeon said as he renewed the bureau’s warning to the public not to eat tahong especially those coming from areas with red tide contamination.
It was learned that tahong coming from Irong-irong, Villareal and Masqueda in Samar are positive of red tide contamination.
Also included in the shellfish ban are harvest from the coastal waters of Mandaon and Milagros in Masbate; Juag Lagoon in Matnog, Sorsogon; Honda Bay in Palawan; Balite Bay in Mati, Davao Oriental; Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur; and Bislig Bay in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
