Gantimpala Theater Foundation (GTF) in cooperation with the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) presents a twin–bill of English plays entitled “The God Stealer” and “The Queen’s Jewel,” based on short stories written by National Artists for literature F. Sionil Jose and Nick Joaquin.
"‘The God Stealer’ and ‘The Queen’s Jewel’ are the latest of a series of adaptations I have written for GTF based on the works of our National Artists for literature," says playwright Jose Victor Torres.
"The God Stealer" is based on a short story with the same title written by F. Sionil Jose. It is a drama about Sam Christie, an American traveler who accompanies his friend Philip Latak, a Manila–bred Ifugao, as they visit the latter’s sick grandfather who resides in the majestic rice terraces.
"The Queen’s Jewel," is based on Nick Joaquin’s "The Legend of the Virgin’s Jewel."
It is a tale filled with magic and mystery as Padre Fernando discovers a gigantic serpent that keeps a mystical jewel. It also highlights the miracles of the Virgin de La Naval.
Cast in "The God Stealer" are GTF Actors Company: Roeder Camañag (Sam Christie); Wowie de Guzman/ Joel Molina (alternately portraying Philip Latak); Billy Parjan (Sadek); Dante Balois/ Ces Aldaba (alternately portraying Apo Lawingan); Perry Dizon (Apo Lakay/ Mumbaki); Penny Mervic Gallido (Bangan); and Ace Urieta (Bugan).
For "The Queen’s Jewel," the performers are: Roeder Camañag (Padre Fernando); Ces Aldaba (Padre Perez); Michael King Urieta (Antonio); Joel Molina (Lakan); Lani Tapia (Babaylan); and Kimberly Diaz/Val Roxas (alternately portraying Mira–Nila).
Espejo and Torres are assisted by Joey Nombres (lights designer); Sonny Aniceto (set designer); Christopher Cervantes (choreographer); Jorge Cabullo (costume designer/ production manager); Adrian Agcaoili (assistant director/ speech coach); and Ruby Solmerano (stage manager).
