IT was Erik Morales’ time to go fast and furious in his training camp in Queretaro, Mexico, on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) as he sparred 12 rounds with a bevy of topnotch sparring partners in anticipation of a spirited challenge from Manny Pacquiao on Jan. 21 in Las Vegas.
Morales took on Betillo Gonzalez, Daniel Attah of Nigeria, Raymundo Gonzalez and Wary Beltran, according to a handpicked member of the Mexican media that was allowed to observe and shoot photos of Morales in training.
After the workout, Morales and members of his training team celebrated the Feast of Three Kings with a small get-together.
Morales has been in deep in training in the picturesque city that is 220 kilometers north of Mexico City since late-November.
Nicknamed "El Terrible," Morales has promised to make up for the lackadaisical showing against Zahir Raheem a few months ago in Los Angeles with a smashing victory over the Filipino lefty, who he had dealt a 12-round unanimous decision defeat the first time they met in March 2005 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Morales, 29, said Pacquiao, 27, will have to pass through the proverbial eye of the needle to emerge victorious at the Thomas and Mack Center.
Fully aware of what Morales brings to the table, Pacquiao knows it’s going to be an uphill climb to exact vengeance, but is optimistic he can get the job done and return home holding Morales’ head.
"I have learned a lot from the mistakes of the first fight. Now, I am not only physically prepared, but mentally prepared, too," said Pacquiao, who is a surprising 7-5 favorite according to oddsmakers.
Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach is likewise confident of seeing his top ward score a win before an expected overflow crowd at the 19,000-seat arena that is within the sprawling University of Nevada-Las Vegas campus just a few blocks away from the popular Las Vegas Boulevard known as The Strip.
