Although a few weeks late, Philippine team coaches whose athletes won medals in the recent Southeast Asian Games will finally get their cash incentives beginning today at the Philippine Sports Commission office.
PSC Chairman William Ramirez said he has released P5.7 million for the coaches whose incentives have been awaited since the athletes got theirs before Christmas.
Around 119 coaches are expected to get their cash rewards with mentors in aquatics, archery, pencak silat, taekwondo, wrestling (2), wushu (2), athletics (4), billiards (2), boxing (2) and bowling (2) getting the maximum cash bonus of P100,000.
Under the guideline issued by the PSC, coaches receive 50 percent of the amount their athletes are entitled to. However, a coach can only get a maximum of P100,000 irregardless of how many medals their athletes won. So even if a coach, say in wushu, which won 11 gold medals, the coach of that sport can get only P100,000 not P550,000.
Athletes, on the other hand, were handed P100,000 per gold medal. Silver medalists got P75,000 each and bronze medalists P50,000 each.
The biggest winners were Alex Pagulayan of billiards, Sheila Mae Perez of diving and Benjamin Tolentino of rowing who won three gold medals each.
Not all coaches, however, will get their money immediately. Those in dancesport, equestrian, fencing, lawn bowls, rowing, chess, sepak takraw, sailing and water polo have been asked to submit their certifications to the PSC.
Meanwhile, Henry Dagmil and Arnel Ferreira will get an additional P100,000 bonus today under Republic Act 9064 which stipulates cash incentives for athletes who break national records.
Dagmil set a record in long jump with a leap of 9.81 meters to eclipse the old 7.79-meter record while Ferreira erased the 12-year-old record of 58.80 meters in hammer throw with a 60.47-meter performance.
