Interior and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes has instructed the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), through Undersecretary for Public Safety Marius Corpus, to intensify the inspection of public buildings, dormitories, and boarding houses that may have failed to comply with fire safety standards set by the bureau and ensure the safety of building occupants.
Reyes issued the directive in the midst of a series of fire incidents that resulted in the death of several persons, including eight students who died during a fire in a two-story dormitory in Sampaloc, Manila.
He said it is sad that each time a fire incident occurs, people would point a finger to the BFP as the culprit.
"Actually, if only our people cooperate with the members of the BFP in promoting fire prevention and suppression measures, we can avoid this unnecessary loss of life and property," Reyes said.
He emphasized that public safety also calls for the strict implementation of fire safety measures stipulated under the building and fire code.
Reyes has enjoined all local chief executives and the BFP to strictly impose the provisions of the law.
"Year in and year out, we celebrate the Month of March as Fire Prevention Month to emphasize the importance of fire safety consciousness among our people," Reyes said. "Let us make everyday a fire safety day and live a happy and meaningful life." (Elena L. Aben)
