THE PHILIPPINES’ bid to win its first-ever Olympic gold medal got a much-needed boost after the International Olympic Committee Solidarity Program offered a scholarship program to Filipino athletes seeking a rare chance to play in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In a statement relayed to the Philippine Olympic Committee, IOCSP Director Pere Miro and Section Manager for athletes James Macleod, said the assistance is aimed at enhancing the performance of Filipinos who are attempting to make it to the national squad.
Those who will get scholarship grants will have an access to appropriate training facilities to enhance their performance for the coming Olympics.
They will also have a coach specialized in their respective sports, regular medical and scientific assistance and control, accident and illness insurance.
The budget allocated for the program is estimated at million. Only athletes from Third World countries can avail of the program.
POC Secretary General Steve Hontiveros had already distributed application forms to archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, boxing, canoeing, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, judo, lawn tennis, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and volleyball.
Deadline of submission is on or before Jan. 15.
The Olympic Solidarity had started awarding the first batch of scholarships since Jan. 1 while grants for the the second batch is expected to be released on May 1.
The program is specifically aimed for third-world countries which could only send small delagates in the quadrennial meet.
