‘The 4400:’ A sci-fi series to return to
spacer

If you’re a fan of "X-Files" or "Taken," then it wouldn’t be surprising if you would also become a fan of "The 4400," which started airing its second season last Jan. 9 on AXN.

After only four episodes for its initial season, "The 4400" kicked-off its return with an episode aptly entitled "Wake-up Call." The said episode about Tess Doerner, a 4400 diagnosed as being schizophrenic and held at the Abenson Psychiatric Hospital, revealed the possibility that more and more abductees were given special human abilities. It also deepened the mystery among 4400s as society seemed to misconstrue their extrahuman-powers as something negative to the human race.

In "Wake-up Call," controlling the minds of the doctors, orderlies, hospital inmates and those who get in contact with her to build a makeshift transmitter is NTAC’s dillema that time. And as the episode’s ending shows, despite not having any visible result after the transmitter is built and finished, it cures and wakes up the sleeping mind of a renowned mind specialist doctor who’s been locked in Abenson Psychiatric Hospital for six years.

But more than just fathoming the numerous possibilities on the 4400’s still unknown powers, the episode displays the drama that lies beneath uncovering the 4400’s mysteries. It shows how each human being, living with a 4400 could be affected. It also brings forth into the picture the growing popularity of Jordan Collier (Billy Campbell) and Shawn Farrel’s (Patrick Flueger). The 4400 Center, a haven for the returnees wanting to rediscover themselves.

"The 4400’s" lure to its audience are the drama, action, suspense and the excitement in discovering whether the re-engineered returnees with their still undisclosed powers would indeed benefit mankind and save its future. Somehow, the 4400 too reminds you of the X-Men who despite their powers used for good was deemed by society as freaks. It also continues the story of Richard, Lily, and their baby Isabelle, the child deemed by Jordan Collier as the key to unlocking the mysteries behind the 4400.

Remiscent of "Taken" is the character of child actress Conchita Campbell, Maia, who can predict the future. While viewers might remember the tandem in "X-Files" via the partnership of agents Tom Baldwin played by Joel Gretsch ("Taken") and Diana Skouris as portaryed by Australian actress Jacqueline McKenzie.

"The 4400," the critically-acclaimed hit series, is about 4,400 people returning to Earth in present time through a big ball of light (which the world witnessed firsthand through live news coverage) after having been reported missing or believed to be dead.

AXN’s biggest series for January 2006 (it airs every Monday), "The 4400" premiered early last year on AXN and became the highest-rated and most-watched original series premiere ever on a basic cable network. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope, "The 4400" also received accolades as it was nominated for three Emmys in 2005. Reports have it that it had at least eight million viewers in the US during its first season run.

"The 4400’s" successful two season run in the US has already spawned a third season. Reports say that production will start early this year. No exact release dates though have been disclosed but who knows, it may return just in time after the second season’s finale for a third run in AXN!
