LOS ANGELES — World light-flyweight king Brian Viloria, who several months ago shared the spotlight alongside Manny Pacquiao, predicted on Friday the 13th the downfall of Mexican Erik Morales on Jan. 21 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
"I see Manny winning this time and I am looking forward to a third fight," said Viloria, the pint-sized banger from Hawaii who traces his roots in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. "I think it’s going the distance and these two will put on an even greater fight."
Morales had beaten Pacquiao on a narrow decision last year at the MGM Grand but Viloria is upbeat this time that the Filipino southpaw whose trainer Freddie Roach is also his cornerman will "win by knockout or by decision."
"Manny’s in really great shape now and he’s worked on his footwork after seeing what (Zahir) Raheem did to Morales," said Viloria, pointing to Raheem’s eye-popping decision victory over Morales in September of last year.
But, Viloria, who is booked to defend the World Boxing Council (WBC) 108-lb title for the first time next month against Jose Antonio Aguirre of Mexico at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, said getting the job done won’t be easy.
"They’ll both try to prove who’s the real man on the ring," added Viloria.
Viloria had captured the WBC crown with a spectacular one-punch, first-round knockout win over Eric Ortiz of Mexico also on the same night Morales got beat and Pacquiao clobbered Hector Velazquez at the Staples Center.
A broadcast journalism major in Michigan, Viloria is traveling to Sin City two days before the big event as he will be doing a live commentary of the Pacquiao-Morales showdown for a TV station in the Philippines.
Last year, a few weeks after taking the title, Viloria spent some time in Manila where he was paraded down the streets of Manila and later feted by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at Malacañang.
