GRANNY GOOSE Tortillos leaned on a fiery third quarter performance yesterday to clobber Far Eastern Insurance, 88-66, and boost its bid for a twice-to-beat privilege in the quarterfinals of the 2006 PBL Heroes Cup at the San Andres Gym in Manila.
JR Quiñahan scored all his seven points in the third to fuel several spurts that saw the Snackmasters pull away from a tight first half battle to snap a two-game losing streak and finish the elims with a 6-5 record.
So overpowering were the Snackmasters in that canto that Jet Latonio, Axel Doruelo and Mike Gavino scattered five points each that left Far Eastern Insurance coach Bong dela Cruz shaking his head in utter disgust over the team’s seeming lack of defense.
Granny Goose took several 17-point leads before settling for a 68-53 advantage going into the final 10 minutes.
The Insurers wound up the elims with a 3-8 record.
While allowing the Teethmasters to score 31 points in the third, the Insurers starved themselves with only 16 markers — no thanks to Tortillos’ swarming defense.
Latonio led Granny Goose Tortillos with 13 points while Nani Epondulan paced the Insurers with 14 points.
With the win, the Snackmasters have the chance to finish either third or fourth and enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarters.
The top two finishers after the elims will advance into the semis outright while the third and fourth placers gain twice-tobeat privileges in the next round.
Granny Goose Tortillos will emerge the No. 3 qualifier if Toyota Otis prevails over Hapee-PCU later in the day and hope that Magnolia and Montaña Pawnshop beat their respective rivals today. If that occurs, they will meet Harbour Centre in the quarters.
But if Magnolia wins over Harbour and Rain or Shine emerges winner over Montaña, Tortillos will settle for fourth place where it will be pitted against the Port Masters in the next round.
The Snackmasters, however, will finish fifth if Hapee crushes Toyota later in the day and Harbour and Montaña beat their fancied rivals.
