TOP FAVORITES Russell Arcilla and Leyan Moncera breezed past separate rivals yesterday to arrange a showdown for the premier boys’ 18 years and under title in the 17th Andrada Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis center.
The top-seeded Arcilla bested Romel Openiano, 6-3, 6-3, while the No. 2 pick Moncera bumped off Jose Lorenzo Opulencia, 6-2, 6-4.
The favorites in the distaff side’s main division also prevailed with top seed Michelle Pang barging into the finals with a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Zhane Quitara and second pick Trudy Gine Amoranto outplaying Melissa Orteza, 6-4, 6-4.
Other early finalists were El Santo Santos and John Francis Largo in the boys’ 16 and under; Amoranto and Ma. Regina Santiago in the girls’ 16 and under; Akio Sy and Kyle Cordero in the boys’ 14 and under; Sarah Jane Lim and JV Custodio in the girls’ 14 and under; Jacob Lagman and Calvin Canlas in the boys’ 12 and under; Mark Escares and Ericka Lagura in the unisex 10 and under; and Maika Tanpoco in the girls’ 12 and under.
Girls’ 12 and under second seed Shanine Olivarez and Katrina ortega were playing for the last finals berth at stake at presstime.
The top-seeded Santos and Largo dropped Marlo Espedido and Mark Balce, respectively, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3, while Amoranto staked herself for a double championship with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Joy Altiche and Santiago shrugged off her loss in the lower age bracket with a 6-3, 7-6 decision over Lim, who osuted her from the 14 and under finals with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Lim will battle the second-seeded Custodio, who topped Jasmine Tan Ho, 6-2, 6-4, in today’s finals.
