CRITERIUM RACING takes center stage beginning today when the Cycling Search Invitational (CSI) kicks off its 10-leg circuit in Tarlac City with a promise of slam-bang action among the country’s top and upcoming riders.
Former Asian king Victor Espiritu and 2004 Tour champion Rhyan Tanguilig head the cast in the men’s elite and under-23 division, one of the four categories lined up in the event presented by Philpost and organized by Treo Sales and Management Corp.
Out to foil their bid are fellow members of the Pagcor Casino Filipino Cycling team, including Lloyd Reynante, Merculio Ramos, Bernardo Luzon, Albert Primero, Orly Villanueva, Ronald Gorantes, Sherwin Diamsay and Fernando Alagano.
Also in the fold is Sherwin Carrera, who recently won a pre-Tour elims race against the members of the national squad in Antipolo.
Three other division titles — youth, executive, masters — are up for grabs in the event, making it one of the biggest in terms of participation and stature. Tarlac City Mayor Genaro Mendoza, Vice Mayor Tess Cabal and City Sports development officer Arnold Rodriguez will flag off the race at 8 a.m.
Marikina and The Fort in Taguig City will host the next two legs of the event sponsored by Pagcor, Philpost and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. Other cities tapped for the event are Tagaytay, Vigan, Cabanatuan, Alaminos, Pangasinan, Angeles, Pampanga and Manila with Cebu City hosting the final leg in May.
