HOST TECHNOLOGICAL University of the Philippines (TUP) showed readiness in ending its six-year title drought, blasting Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST) yesterday at the start of the 18th State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association National Capital Region (SCUAA-NCR) Season men’s volleyball tournament at the TUP Ground in San Marcelino, Manila.

Behind the troika of spikers Michael Delos Santos, Christian Ramirez, and Daryl Balatayo, the Technocrats got off to a strong opening set, and then bounced back from a heartbreaker in second frame by playing superb in the next two to notch the 25-15, 27-29, 25-15, 25-19 victory.

In the other games, last year’s runner-up Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) joined TUP in the winner’s column by demolishing Philippine Normal University (PNU), 25-13, 25-13, 25-11, in just 48 minutes.

Defending champion Rizal Technological University (RTU) did not break a sweat in its initial assignment, winning it via default after Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PHILSCA) failed to show up in time.

Later in the day, RTU thumped PNU, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18, for its second straight win.

The tournament will take a breather today, and will resume tomorrow at the RTU Gym.
