170 Filipino Muslim pilgrims arrive from Makkah
The first batch of 170 Filipino pilgrims led by Maguindanao Gov. Datu Andal Ampatuan arrived yesterday in Manila from Makkah, Saudi Arabia, where a deadly hajj stampede in the Mina Valley resulted in the deaths of 345 and injury to over 300 pilgrims.

Khalid Ataya, chief executive officer of the SkyMark Financial, owner of the Vancouver-based PayGen International and the international card association Cashless Card, arrived yesterday to launch an electronic payment system that is expected to speed up the delivery of social and economic services in the country’s 1,502 municipalities under the auspices of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).

48 NPA fighters, leaders surrender in Agusan del Sur
PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur — Forty-eight New People’s Army (NPA) fighters, including four commanders, voluntarily surrendered and swore allegiance to the government before top officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at an Army brigade headquarters in sitio Awa, barangay New Leyte, Prosperidad town the other day, a regional Army spokesman reported yesterday.
