Feast of the Santo Niño
TODAY’S fiesta of the Santo Niño is an annual celebration that takes place on the Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord in many churches and Catholic institutions bearing the name Santo Niño. This fiesta centers on the Santo Niño of Cebu with its sinulog dancing and the famous cry for God’s help, "Pit Senyor.’’

100 years of certitude
NOT only is she a woman of sense, she is also 100 years old — that’s Pura Santillan-Castrence; she recently came out with a book called "As I See It: Filipinos and the Philippines."

Driver of the economy
It was a similar picture in previous years. In 2005, the average remittances of Filipino migrant workers added up to more than half of the national budget, reaching an average of US.5 billion or R476.5 billion a year.

Starting the new year right
WITH the Holiday Season over –and with students back in school, the lucky ones with jobs back at work, and Congress resuming its sessions (and investigations), it now the time to think of how to do the Year 2006 right. Over the past eight months, it has been my rare privilege to write a Sunday column regularly for the Bulletin. At the end of each weekly article, I summarize what should be the most important messages for each of us to remember – whether official or private citizen, whether elite or common tao. So, in the hope that we do the year 2006 right, let me offer the following capsules:

The grandeur of silence
I WAS told by a friend that he experiences real silence only when he visits a memorial park or cemetery. For sure, he does not want to die soon and join those who are resting in peace. He was simply lamenting the fact that silence is fast becoming a scarce commodity in our noisy world.

US-Iran ties icy as ever
TEHERAN/WASHINGTON — On January 20, it will be 25 years since hostages were released from the US embassy in Teheran, and US-Iranian relations are as icy as ever.

Science as play
THE products of science and technology (S&T) permeate and determine many activities in modern life. This is the reason for our intense desire to harness S&T in our economic ventures – such as food production, building of shelters, traveling, communication, recreation, etc.

Miracles through Mama Mary
LET me share the story of a friend, Oscar I. Violago, who is a diehard devotee of Mama Mary about his life’s miracles, especially when he was down in business.

Blessing of the children
PEOPLE were bringing children to [Jesus] that He might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this He became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to Me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then He embraced them and blessed them, placing His hands on them.

The little shop of life
IF you look up the word "life" in the dictionary, you will see many definitions. One simple definition is as follows: Life is the period between life and death. During this period, people spend their lives looking for happiness. But again, happiness means different things to different people. To some, it is amassing wealth. To others, it’s finding the right spouse. Or getting the right job. Or just enjoying life by drinking, gambling, and indulging in other vices as well. However, to some, happiness in life is more than all of these. It is having a close relationship with God.

Try walking
"From exertion come wisdom and purity from sloth ignorance and sensuality."
