Cousins’ Cuisine

Jack’s Loft in Wilson St., San Juan, lives up to the basic principles of good eating as it serves international food in, more or less, affordable and generous proportions.

Here, an order of Cream of Squash can boost one’s appetite with its good blend of fresh squash and cream, topped with croutons and bacon bits. This is especially true when one prefers the squash soup to be the antipasti for Pacific Rim cookery, such as a platter of Chicken Salad Panini (a chicken salad mix with grapes and topped with veggies on grilled foccacia bread). If one prefers the squash soup to counter a heavily spiced dish that will go well with beer or vin blanc, one can always order Screaming Hot Buffalo Wings (lightly fried chicken wings tossed in Madagascarian Hot Sauce and Jalapeño puree, served with cold bleu cheese dip) according to one’s desired texture: crispy or soft-crusted.

PAN-SEARED PEPPERED BEEF WITH MASHED POTATO

Jack’s Loft’s Pan-seared Peppered Roast Beef—roast filet d’ beouf, peppered, re-seared, and drizzled with wild mushroom-bechamel sauce on mashed potato—is a fairly generous dish that makes a good entrée.

Though Jack’s Loft lives up to the principles of bistro cuisine and is a hangout place for yuppies because of its quick yet quality culinary services, it is also a good place for foodies who love to drink.

Launched in December 2001, Jack’s Loft is one of the country’s first dessert bar concepts, operated by managing partners (and cousins) John Tian Seng and Erik Cua. They developed the concept based on an idea of their cousin-in-law Jack Johnston, who lives in Canada. Jack’s apartment’s architecture, where the three used to hang out and party, inspired the décor and architecture of Jack’s Loft.

Jack’s Loft is known for its pastries, specifically the Jack’s Cheesecake, the Chocolate Decadent Cake, and the New York Baked Cheesecake. Its food line includes a variety of pastas, rice toppings, tapas, and quality gumbos in addition to its popular desserts.

RECOMMENDED DISHES:

- OREO CHEESECAKE (crushed OREO cookies baked with rich cream cheese and a hint of baileys)

- CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CHEESECAKE (a two-layered cheesecake combination of chocolate mousse and sour cream cheesecake, on top of oreo crust)

- CREAM OF SQUASH

- JACK’S CHICKEN SALAD PANINI

- SCREAMIN HOT "BUFFALO WINGS"

- PAN-SEARED PEPPERED ROAST BEEF
