The University of Santo Tomas (UST) will honor the choices of television programs and personalities of its students for 2005 during the awarding ceremonies of the 2nd USTV Students Choice Awards on Jan. 20, 6 p.m. at the UST Medicine Auditorium, España, Manila. UST Rector Rev. Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. will lead the awarding ceremonies.
Carrying the theme, "Tele–Tomasino: A Critical Appreciation of Television," the awards, organized by the Office of the Secretary General, Office for Student Affairs, Central Student Council and Student Organizations Coordinating Council, will cover television programs aired between May 2004 and Sept. 2005. Through the 2nd USTV Students’ Choice Awards UST intends to promote media awareness, particularly television, to its more than 30,000 student population and eventually to enable the students to form their critique based on Thomasian values anchored on the Gospel.
The panel of consultants headed by Rev. Fr. Isidro C. Abaño, O.P., UST Secretary General, includes Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., former UST Rector and chairman of the Commission on Higher Education; Ambassador Henrietta de Villa, former ambassador to the Holy See; Rev. Fr. Romulo Rodriguez, O.P., regent of the UST College of Education; Ms. Crispina Martinez Belen, entertainment editor of the Manila Bulletin; Lito Zulueta, arts and culture editor of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and chairman of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino; and five student leaders.
The nominees are: "24 Oras" "Insider," "TV Patrol World" (news program); Arnold Clavio, Mike Enriquez, Ted Failon (male broadcast news and public affairs host); Karen Davila, Korina Sanchez, Mel Tiangco (female broadcast news and public affairs host); "Imbestigador," "Magandang Gabi, Bayan," "The Correspondents" (documentary program); "Debate with Mare and Pare," "Dong Puno Live," and "Y-Speak" (public affairs talk show); "3R," "F," and "Rated-K" (magazine program); "Art Angel," "Art Jam," "Sineskwela (educational program); "Bubble Gang," "Goin’ Bulilit," "Nuts Entertainment" (comedy);
"Asap ’05," "Eat Bulaga" and "Wowo-wee" (variety program); "Full House," ‘Lovers in Paris," "Memories in Bali" (foreign soap opera); "Extra Challenge," "Star Circle Quest," "Starstruck" (reality program); "S-Files," "Star Talk," "The Buzz" (entertainment news show); "Maalaala Mo Kaya" and "Magpakailanman" (drama program); "Anghel na Walang Langit," "En-cantadia," "Kampanerang Kuba" (drama mini-series); John Lloyd Cruz for "Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin" Richard Gutierrez for "Sugo," Dennis Trillo for "Darna" (actor, drama mini–series); Claudine Barretto for "Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin," Iza Calzado for "Encantadia" Angel Locsin for "Darna" (actress, drama mini-series).
There will also be an award for the students’ choice of music video.
The TV station that will win the most number of awards will be given the USTV Students’ Choice for Television Station of the Year.
