Now it’s men’s turn to hike up those hems

UMMER 2006 is a short season or, rather, the prevailing trend is of a major shortage. So hit the beach (or wherever nowadays, except floral board shorts in the gym) and reveal those muscular legs in every length, color, print and fabric. Each designer trotted out their version in every way possible; from Louis Vuitton’s short shorts to Michael Kors’s camouflage cargos and Dolce & Gabbana’s denim varieties above and below the knees, respectively. Play up the trend by styling with a plain T-shirt for a casual look or pair it with a long-sleeved shirt and blazer for a more contemporary fashion. Give your tired old jeans a much-needed break and take your cue on how to wear shorts this summer from these top picks off the international runways.

There’s something about the play Nobody’s Perfect that genially reminds one of the movie Mrs. Doubtfire. It could be that the protagonists are both cross-dressers. Moreover, when a man dresses like a woman, they all cunningly look like Mrs. Doubtfire—you know, the shifty dress, curly wig and oversized reading glasses. However, both stories reveal a different kind of love story.

In Repertory Phililppines’ staging of Simon Williams’ Nobody’s Perfect, Leonard (played by Miguel Faustmann) is a frustrated novelist who finds that the only way to get his novel published is by pretending to be a woman. Unfortunately, Leonard’s publisher Harriet (the gorgeous Ana Bitong) is a feminist and adamant in meeting the novelist face to face to discuss the book deal. Leonard immediately takes on the identity of his creation and the rollercoaster comedy begins as Faustmann’s character later realizes he’s falling in love with Harriet.

Nobody’s Perfect runs at the Repertory’s Globe Theatre at Onstage, Greenbelt 1 until February 5. Aside from Faustmann and Bitong, Bonggoy Manahan plays Leonard’s humorously drunk father, and Charlie Barredo is Leonard’s daughter. Directed by Rep’s artistic director Baby Barredo.

The Year of the Fire Dog is believed to bring good fortune. With this in mind, one should welcome 2006 with a grand and bold celebration with fine dining, which Makati Shangri-La Hotel proudly offers the public. Celebrating with fiery colors and dragons, Shangri-La’s Lion Dance marks the arrival of the New Year as the ceremonial dance, performed by the Philippine Ling Nam Athletic Association, kicks off the event on Sunday, January 29, 2006 at the hotel lobby. A fun cacophony of drums, cymbals and firecrackers will dispel negative spirits as the performance travels from different areas of the hotel.

The advertisement goes: "What’s an Intel doing in an Apple?" Well, according to Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs, a lot, apparently. Just a few weeks back, Apple introduced its new MacBook laptop featuring the new Intel Core Duo processor—delivering up to four times the performance of the PowerBook G4. Housed in a stunning one-inch aluminum case which weighs 5.6 pounds, the MacBook boasts of technological advancements for one of its caliber such as the integrated iSight video camera for video conferencing on-the-go and MagSafe which when charging on a power cord, the connector disconnects once the notebook is inadvertently yanked. Talk about safety.

The visuals got better, too. The new MacBook features a 67-percent brighter 15-inch display, which is now as bright as Apple’s Cinema Displays. Also debuting in this mean machine are Front Row and Apple Remote, turning your laptop into a portable theater. Whether you want to flick through songs over at iTunes or finding your favorite Podcasts, Apple now makes it easier for its users to enjoy media content. A truly festive experience!

The Apple MacBook will be available from the Power Mac center by the second quarter of 2006. For inquiries, call Power Mac Power Plant Mall at tel. no. 750-6084.

Dance

Together with the introduction of its Rock Star line, Nike unveils its latest form of exercise to rock and pump your booty this year. Nike sees dance as a sport and believes it is changing the landscape of not only women’s fitness but men’s as well. This love for dance has prompted Nike to excite its consumers with a fresh move this summer.

Beginning this February, the Rock Star Dance workout, made by world-renowned choreographer Jamie King, will be exclusive to Fitness First club. Although its launch is targeted at women, guys can participate in it as well. Heck, it was made by a guy! So start practicing your moves and prepare to grind.

For class schedules, call Fitness First Libis at tel. no. 421-4220 or The Fort at tel. no. 819-0000.

Look Good

ONE are the days when men took their grooming regimen for granted and just used whatever soap in the bathroom from head to toe. Good for the soap economy, bad for your skin. But you really can’t blame them, before there weren’t places where men could have their fill of skin care. For some, the dermatologist’s clinic would be the safest. And when it comes to my grooming needs, Belo Medical Group is on my speed dial for Glycopeel Cleaning (for a squeaky-clean facial) and body buffer treatments like Body Scrub with Bleach.

Headed by the doctor to the stars, Dra. Vicki Belo, the clinic’s ever-expanding menu of facials, body treatments and cosmetic surgery procedures keep men their best looking all throughout the year. New treatments like the non-invasive Thermage are clinically proven to tighten and gently lift skin to smooth out wrinkles and renew facial contours. Also available are their laser treatments like Clear Light Acne Therapy which is a therapeutic light that eliminates the bacteria that causes pimples in just one month, and non-surgical rejuvenation such as the Botox which flats out dynamic wrinkles like frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet.

They say men are vainer than women. Well, with institutions like Belo Med, men can definitely be just that. For consultations, call Belo Med Makati at tel. nos. 817-7178 and 815-8970 or mobile no. (0917) 839-8182.
