Atienza leads welcomers on his arrival tomorrow
Manila Mayor Jose "Lito" L. Atienza Jr. will lead the hero’s welcome for Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao dubbed "Tagumpay ng Pinoy" on his return to Manila tomorrow morning.
Pacquiao, an adopted son of Manila, is expected to arrive at the Manila City Hall at 9 a.m. on Friday for a courtesy call on Atienza who will accompany him to Malacañang to pay a courtesy call on President Arroyo.
From there, they will embark on a ticker tape parade that will kick off at the Manila City Hall; straight to Jones Bridge; right at Escolta to Plaza Sta. Cruz; straight to Dasmariñas; right at Quintin Paredes; right at Regina Regente; left at Recto; right at Juan Luna; right at Tayuman; right at Forbes; left at Laong Laan; right at Blumentritt; left at España;
Straight at Quezon Ave.; right at Scout Chuatoco; left going to Mother Ignacia; right at Scout Esguerra; right at Eugenio Lopez; left at Timog; right at EDSA; right at Kamuning; left at Tomas Morato; right at E. Rodriguez; left at Araneta; right at Aurora Blvd. (R. Magsaysay Blvd); left at Nagtahan; right at Zamora to Peñafrancia; left at Pedro Gil; and right at Onyx to Dagohoy Market.
At 4:30 p.m., Atienza will join Pacquiao in "A Tribute to Pinoy Champions" at the Rajah Sulayman Park in front of Baywalk in Malate, Manila with a special appearance by the world-renowned Lettermen. This will be followed at 7 p.m. by the "Hataw Pacquiao Victory Party" also at the Rajah Sulayman Park in coordination with Solar Entertainment and Solar Sports.
Due to these, traffic authorities announced that the northbound lane of Roxas Blvd. will be closed to vehicular traffic starting 3 p.m. while the southbound lane will be closed at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, Quezon City is planning to make Pacquiao its adopted son through a city council resolution being prepared by Councilors Winston "Winnie" Castelo and Junie Marie "Jemboy" Castelo.
The Castelos agree that such plan is well deserved by Pacquiao who brought pride and honor for the nation.
"This is one resolution which I think would get a positive unanimous decision among our colleagues in the council," Councilor Winston Castelo said.
Councilor Winston Castelo said neither would the city’s constituents entertain second thoughts on their proposal because even the entire Filipino people would welcome Pacquiao like a beloved son upon his return to the country.
"It would definitely be a jubilat country-wide celebration of the homecoming of a national hero who gallantly fought and won for the nation’s glory and unity," he added.
Councilor Junie Marie Castelo, who represents the youth in the Quezon City Council, urged young Filipinos to emulate the qualities exemplified by Pacquiao before and during fight which ended with his convincing victory over Mexican Erik Morales.
He said Pacquiao won the contest and rekindled the hopes of the struggling nation by showing the whole world that a Filipino can rise above a challenge through courage, determination, discipline, strength, and wit.
"Above all, I believe he was a true winner because he practiced fair play, trusted God, and loved his country," he added.
