CORAZON Cojuangco Aquino was born on January 25, 1933, into a prominent family. Her parents were Don Jose Cojuangco and Doña Demetria Sumulong. Her family went to the United States in 1946 where she finished her Bachelor of Arts degree. She returned to the Philippines to study law at the Far Eastern University. Her marriage to Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. ended her law studies and she became her husband’s main support and inspiration in his political activities.
Presidential Proclamation 1081 placed the country under martial law. Her husband and many others were imprisoned. Ninoy’s assassination in August 21, 1983, thrust her into the political maelstrom. She became the opposition’s candidate for the presidency when the administration unexpectedly called for presidential elections in February 7, 1986. Election frauds, the people’s discontent against dictatorship, economic difficulties, and a military revolt led to the overthrow of the government. On February 25, 1986, Corazon C. Aquino was inaugurated as President of the Philippines.
Notwithstanding several coup attempts, natural disasters, and economic difficulties, President Corazon C. Aquino made a number of achievements that are milestones in our country’s history. The 1987 Constitution is her foremost legacy to the country and its people. She restored democracy and bolstered democratic institutions, thereby ensuring the country’s political security besides strengthening its economy. She gave credence to her statement that she "would rather die a meaningful death than live a meaningless life."
United States President Ronald W. Reagan, during their meeting on September 17, 1986, paid her a glowing tribute: "Her courage and her commitment to democracy, mirroring those some qualities in the Filipino people, have inspired the world."
Happy Birthday, President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino!
