AMERICAN PROMOTER Gary Shaw believes it is inevitable for current world superfeatherweight ruler Marco Antonio Barrera to face Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao soon.
Shaw states that there is no other marquee fight in the market for the 31-year-old Barrera than Pacquiao.
"It’s the single biggest fight for Barrera out there. There’s no bigger fight for Marco Antonio Barrera than Manny Pacquiao," disclosed Shaw.
Pacquiao and Barrera traded leather on November 2003 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
The 27-year-old Pacquiao demolished Barrera in 11 rounds, a win that gave the Filipino icon a slew of major fights in the United States that has so far netted for him millions of dollars.
Barrera has since recovered from that embarrassing loss by winning several significant fights, the biggest of which was a 12-round decision win against bitter rival and compatriot Erik Morales in a World Boxing Council (WBC) superfeatherweight title fight.
Golden Boy Promotions, an outfit owned by boxing superstar Oscar Dela Hoya which also promotes Barrera, has already offered a March 25 fight date to the Pacquiao camp.
But the offer is expected to be turned down owing to its proximity of Pacquiao’s recent fight.
Pacquiao is coming off a spectacular 10th round destruction of Mexican idol Erik Morales last Sunday in a 12-round non-title superfeatherweight bout at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Meanwhile, Shaw is salivating at the prospect of holding one of Pacquiao’s upcoming fights in Manila.
Shaw is convinced that bringing HBO to cover the fight in the Philippines is one major event for the sport.
"I would love to do a fight with him in the Philippines. Can you imagine HBO going to the Philippines and doing a Manny fight there? It would be ultra-spectacular," added Shaw.
