LA Pinoys go gaga over Pacquiao

LOS ANGELES — Pacquiao fever is almost everywhere. After arriving at the Palazzo last Monday, Manny Pacquiao was greeted by hundreds of cheering fans, each one eager to get a glimpse of the man whose feat over the weekend was so overpowering that, for a moment back in the Philippines, the world stood still.

Men and women with kids, carrying pad papers, pens and digital cameras stormed Pacquiao’s unit and were on hand to watch the fighter review his 10th round demolition of Erik Morales in his 27-inch color TV.

The people reacted as though they didn’t know what was the result of Saturday night’s smashing win at the Thomas and Mack Center.

They all cheered when Pacquiao connected with his power punches and they also cringed when Morales landed some of his best blows.

In the end, Pacquiao made everyone, totaling 40, happy as he signed every piece of paper handed over and even souvenir items that his admirers asked him to sign.

This was the same scene before and even after his victory over the 29-year-old Mexican nicknamed "El Terrible" at the 51st floor of the Wynn Las Vegas, where Filipino-Americans waited in line to see their idol in the flesh.

But among those who made a supreme sacrifice to help Pacquiao was a former Special Action Force, Cavite-born Arnel Mendoza, who drove 300 miles to bring some members of the boxer’s extended entourage to this city on board his black Chevy Tahoe.

"Arnel did not go the extra mile in helping us go here to LA," said Cris Aquino, one of the most ardent supporters. "He went 600 miles and he did it on the same day his wife Mylene is celebrating her birthday."

A one-way trip to Las Vegas from here measures 300 miles.

On Tuesday, Pacquiao will make a visit to the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood to personally thank those who helped him in his training for the Morales bout.

Pacquiao always does this shortly after his fights and it is expected that when he steps inside the sweat shop owned by trainer Freddie Roach at noon, the place would rock.

Team Pacquiao leaves for Manila on board a Philippine Airlines flight on Wednesday night. A warm welcome awaits him in Manila on Friday morning.
