LA SALLE EXPLOITED the absence of Ateneo’s top gun to seize the lead in college play and continued to set the pace in two other divisions after the penultimate round Monday of the sixth Samsung Interscholastic golf championship at the challenging Tagaytay Highlands and Midlands Golf Club courses.

Oliver Gan erupted for 52 points while Justin Limjap and Marlo Capinianes each delivered 49 each as La Salle, down by eight before the round, outscored their arch-rivals by 19 (150-131) to storm ahead by 11 with a 36-hole aggregate of 283.

After leading the Eagles to an eight-point lead in Round 1, Escalona did not play and the trio of Kevin Lachica, Don Padilla and Ramon Garcia just couldn’t stop the La Salle onslaught. Lachica had 45, Padilla 44 and Garcia 42 for a 272 aggregate.

La Salle-Greenhills finally got a big round from defending overall individual champ Miko Yee who matched par 72 for 54 allowing his team to keep a nine-point lead in boys high school at 277. Other scorers for LSGH were Marvin Mendoza with 43 and Alan Guy with 42.

Geleen Handog and Kim Hong scored 44 and 42, respectively, to keep La Salle-Taft stay afloat by eight over St. Paul in the high school-college girls competition of the event co-sponsored by Tokyo Tokyo, KZG, Microtel, Srixon, Philippine Airlines as the official carrier, Sunbolt, Rudy Project, C-Lium Fiber and Sports Plus. Media partners are Wave 89.1, Jam 88.3 , 89.9, 99.5 RT, 103.5 K-Lite and Killer Bee.

La Salle’s bid for a sweep of all four divisions it entered is in trouble as Ateneo’s Marcel Puyat, Bino dela Paz and Rafael Vera Cruz padded their lead to eight in the grad school boys action.
