Onwards to another 30 years of excellence

It all started with a vision to provide quality education to the residents of Binan, Laguna and its neighboring municipalities. With their integrity, religious and civic involvement and business acumen, the Limaco sisters believed that education empowers an individual’s quality of life. As Saint Michael’s College of Laguna (SMCL) celebrates it’s Pearl Anniversary this year, its 30 years of fruitful, meaningful existence and dynamic leadership has been geared to its continuous quest for excellence. Determined to re-invent, re-focus and break new grounds, SMCL looks back with pride at the traditions and goes beyond it.

Recently, Michaelean alumni gathered to relive the memories of their younger days. To share their reminiscence, the students, faculty and administration also graced the Pearl Anniversary Celebration of SMCL held at the Grand Ballroom of The Bellevue Manila Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. It was an intimate gathering of the SMCL community and its collaborators, who have contributed in many ways than one to what the College has become through the years. Such gathering commenced the beginning of a year-long celebration of academic, social and cultural activities on the theme "Celebrating the Michaelean Character."

The 4th Ugnayang Guro, an annual academic assembly that aims to help educators in Laguna in addressing their current pedagogic concerns, had INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair Awardee, Dr. Josette Biyo, as the paper presenter. Dr. Biyo inspired the audience with the personal experiences she shared on how she broke new grounds in a small place in Iloilo, how she opened new doors to young scientists using first-hand experience and investigative methods and how they were able to conquer the international academic community winning top prizes in international science competitions. She inspired every participant for her passion for quality education that is definitely beyond mediocrity. The theme of the 4th Ugnayang Guro was Focus: Breaking New Grounds.

The momentous affair also showcased the talents of all those with the Michaelean blood running through their veins - students and faculty members alike. Adding to the excitement was seeing faculty members of the past and present dancing to the beat of the music. It garnered much enthusiasm that the dance floor was packed.

As an emblem of modesty, chastity and purity, the pearl symbolizes love, success and happiness. And as SMCL celebrated its Pearl Anniversary, it was evident that the College has emerged as a successful institution where love and happiness abound. But like pearl which is a very fragile gem, SMCL also has a lot to go through before becoming a diamond.

Lourdes Almeda-Sese, president and CEO of SMCL, left an inspiring thought to live by, "And yet we cannot rest on our laurels for still, there remains the challenge of the next 30 years. So what is my vision for those future generations? I would say this: let us go beyond tradition. let us break new grounds."
