Protecting the oceans is considered an undertaking of titanic proportion: oceanic waters cover practically three-fourth of the Earth’s surface and harbor an abundance of the world’s animals and plants.
Various environmentalist groups have taken measures to preserve our marine resources, but these seem to be undermined by the adverse effects of human activity on oceans. Thus, the need to raise public consciousness on caring for oceans is now a primary concern.
Recognizing this, RCBC is doing its share in the collective effort to promote care for our oceans through its Kwentong Kalikasan Katha ng Kabataan, a nationwide short-story writing contest on environmental protection.
The contest is held yearly by RCBC as part of its commitment to help educate the public on the need to care for and respect the environment. By engaging grade school children in this project, RCBC hopes to develop responsible, environment-caring citizens of the future and inspire more people to join in the endeavor.
This year’s theme, ‘Caring for Oceans,’ "aims to draw attention to the need to preserve our ocean waters and all living things that depend on it for survival," according to RCBC president and COO Francisco S. Magsajo, Jr. "Our efforts may be considered modest, but we think every little step counts in this campaign to care for our oceans – for our children and for generations to come."
RCBC’s Kwentong Kalikasan encourages grade school children who have a penchant for writing to submit their most inspiring tales about this year’s theme.
In return, they not only get the chance to win prizes but also gain, at such a tender age, the opportunity to take part in the noble cause to help save our oceans. Winning stories are printed in Kwentong Kalikasan activity books which are distributed to all elementary schools as teaching tools.
Entry forms that contain the contest rules and prizes have been distributed to all RCBC and RCBC Savings Bank business centers nationwide, the Department of Education offices and various schools. Deadline of submission of entries is on January 16, 2006.
