The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) is negotiating with the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) to annex a total of 22 hectares in Baguio to accommodate existing and new investors that continue to flock into the already fully-occupied Baguio City Economic Zone (BCEZ).
BCEZ zone administrator Tereso Panga told reporters the arrangement with the BCDA could be implemented via a rental sharing arrangement. The additional lots are just adjacent to the PEZA ecozone, which is being managed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and is being used as training ground for the Department of National Defense.
"We are full to the brim," Panga said noting that the 113-hectare BCEZ is already fully occupied with 60 percent allocated for industrial development and the rest for housing and others. There are a total of 14 locators in BCEZ.
Panga attributed the growth of the ecozone largely to having hosted two big American-owned multinational firms: TI (Philippines) Inc. and Moog Controls Corp.
"Both firms have attracted their suppliers to follow them here and new suppliers are also relocating here to supply to these two exporters," Panga said.
BCEZ had earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BCDA for an initial 6.5 hectare but 3.5 hectares have already been earmarked for Moog’s next expansion expansion program.
Last year, TI’s invested 0 million for its fourth expansion to be operational by the third quarter this year and Moog also invested million for its third expansion program as manufacturer of servo bulb components for the aviation industry.
This year alone, there are four committed investments of companies that are going to supply the requirements of either TI or Moog.
These are Ingasco with P500 million for the production of clean gas to supply to TI since its existing supplier, CIGI, can no longer meet the huge requirements of TI.
