Saying the best chance to achieve peace in Mindanao is now, an alliance of Muslim organizations aired strong support for the administration of President Arroyo and Charter change (Cha-cha), particularly the shift to a parliamentary-federal system of government.
Muslims in Metro Manila led by the Filipino-Muslim Democratic Alliance (FIMDA) headed by Amoran Andy Andoga, president, closed ranks and rallied their people behind the leadership of Mrs. Arroyo, and, at the same time, welcomed Cha-cha as an opportunity to revise the 1987 Constitution which, some have said, failed to respond effectively to the needs and welfare of Filipinos, particularly Muslims.
Dr. Saga Mabaning, spokesman of FIMDA, which held a press conference Saturday at the Max’s Restaurant along Roxas Blvd. in Baclaran, Parañaque City in which at least a 100 people attended, believe a parliamentary-federal system of government could unlock the secret to achieving peace in strife-torn Mindanao, the "land of the still-unfulfilled promise."
"This is our best chance for peace. We believe that a federal form of government will silence the guns of both sides and stop, once for all, bloodshed since the new structure will usher in a bureaucracy that will ensure the rights and privileges of the Muslim minorities under the new form of government," Mabaning said.
He offered FIMDA’s 200-member organizations to the President in enlightening Mindanaoans, Muslims, and Christians in their diaspora in Luzon and the Visayas.
The FIMDA official said a well-planned massive information drive can harness and get the support of the Bangsamoro people (Muslim Filipinos). "We are willing to be tapped by President Arroyo in (the government) information drive on Cha-cha. Our members in the field are more than willing to shoulder this task because we believe that this is for the benefit of our Filipino Muslim brothers who have been longing for peace, tranquility, and progress in Mindanao," said Mabaning.
