Field of dreams A NUMBER of "moral lessons" are read into the Ultra tragedy, the most obvious of which is that so many of our people are so hard up that they can only dream of instant riches or some relief from poverty. No one anticipated that the field of dreams could turn into a killing field.
Mining safeguards THE administration, instead of swiftly yielding to the demand of the Catholic Church to wipe out the mining industry, should reject it on principle.
National Day of New Zealand TODAY, New Zealand celebrates its National Day, which is also called Waitangi Day. The country considers this celebration as a day of thanksgiving in commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840, between the Maoris, the indigenous people of New Zealand, and the British Crown. Under the Treaty, the signatories were granted equal rights to land in New Zealand.

It was bound to happen! NO matter how hackneyed and overused the expression, "a disaster waiting to happen," it best described the situation at the University of Life premises in Pasig City where an early morning stampede last Saturday took the lives of at least 79 people.
Our sympathies and prayers to the unfortunate stampede victims at the PhilSport Arena formerly ULTRA in Pasig City on February 4, 2006 THEY came in droves, some in the wee hours of the morning, to watch the game shows’ first anniversary celebration and, hopefully, get to participate in some of the contests of the show. For the throng of viewers and expectant participants who trooped to the Ultra to watch the "Wowowee’’ game show, it offered a chance to improve their lives should they be fortunate enough to win some of the prizes in the raffle, contests, and other events that came with the anniversary celebration.
Responsible mining THE government supports a responsible mining policy that creates jobs, provides a safe workplace, is environmentally sound, and is in accordance with international best practices. We do not have to choose between creating jobs, on one hand, and a clean environment on the other. We must do both.
The healing at Gennesaret AFTER making the crossing [to the other side of the sea], Jesus and His disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there. As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized Him. They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was. Whatever villages or towns or countryside He entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him that they might touch only the tassel on His cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.
The tradition of the elders Mark 7:1-13
A pyramid of reforms WE survey the national scene, and everything looks bleak and hopeless. That is why there is an imperative for radical change, and a few sectors are batting for radical actions at the very top, involving the national leadership.
Message from India INDIA has maintained a silent yet sustained presence in the Philippines. In a recent national day celebration, Ambassador Nakrekha Sharma reminded one and all that India-Philippine relations "…go back into the distant past when intrepid seafaring Indianized traders, immigrants from Indonesia and the Malaya Peninsula, brought cultural influences, including the Sanskrit script…." That seems to have borne fruit in today’s globalized world where the two countries, according to Ambassador Sharma, "… face the dual challenge of managing political, economic, and social change in an environment of rising expectations and growing disparities…."
Breakfast meeting on Salas’ vision THE relevance of the late Rafael M. Salas as a man of vision for his country and people came alive the other day at a breakfast meeting attended by his former associates and friends who apparently missed his kind of perceptive and creative leadership in public affairs.
Preventive cardiology THIS year, I was invited to act as a judge on medical students’ speeches on the subject of "Preventive Cardiology: Its time has Come and Act We Must Now" at the 6th National Convention of Prevention Cardiology along with Anding Roces and Cheche Lazaro.
Psychology of luck THIS column extends its condolence to the families of almost 100 of those who were stampeded to death or were injured while thousands were lining to move to reach the stands of the Wowowee show, and toppling over one another to be able to attend the first anniversary of this Show, all dreaming of winning jeepneys, houses, or even the top prize of R1 million. This was an event that almost all the victims, suffering from poverty, would want to attend even if they had to face all kinds of risk. But to win prizes through the Wowowee way is just like any gambling operation that involves luck. In fact, trivial events can have the most astonishing and coincidences or disasters.
My high school in 1906 IN the first decade of the US colonial government grade schoolers – Grade I to VI – were old boys and girls. There was no public school system between 1565 and 1898 (333 years).
‘30 over 60’ ALL my life," says sculptor Isa Lorenzo, "I have been fascinated by the Filipina, how she holds power within our societal system; how they manage this power by quietly taking on pivotal roles, and how they use this power to eventually come into their own. The result of their individual journeys is what I am interested in – strong, timeless Filipinas with a humanity that transcends history and legacy."
Accidents and tragedies THE tragic stampede at the Ultra stadium was an accident waiting to happen. It was inevitable and unpreventable.
The greater tragedy PRESIDENT Arroyo has called on all Filipinos to unite and rise above the tragedy of the "Wowowee" stampede at the Philippine Sports Arena in Pasig city last Saturday.
