Samsung Surpasses 1 Million Mark in Sales of LCD TVs
spacer

Samsung has already established itself as a mobile phone design leader with sales of over 10 million units of the SGH-E700 clamshell camera phone and SDH-D500 slider camera phone. Now the company has added to its line-up of best-selling products with the sales of its first million-unit-selling digital TV.

Samsung’s “V”-shaped LCD TV series (called the “Rome series”) broke the million mark in sales on January 31, a milestone for a flat panel TV line.  The sales volume was achieved one year after the product went into mass production in February 2005.

The global market for LCD TVs exceeded 19.6 million units in 2005 (according to iSuppli).  This means that out of every 20 units sold worldwide one was a Samsung “Rome series” LCD TV.

The “Rome series” does not follow the square-shaped design of conventional TVs.  The bottom half of the TV gently slopes to form a “V”, differentiating it immediately from other TVs.  Slim speakers are inconspicuously mounted on the lower part of the TV as part of the “V”-shaped motif. The overall look is compact and the TV serves as an attractive decorative feature for any home.

The “Rome series” was recognized for its innovative design receiving the prestigious IF Design Award in 2005.

Sangheung Shin, senior vice president of the Visual Display Sales & Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics, stated, “In the future, design will be an important factor in determining the winners and losers in the flat screen TV market.  Samsung Electronics will continue to apply a design differentiation strategy to LCD TVs as well as plasma TVs and DLP TVs to create more ‘million seller’ models.”
