National Dental Health Month
IN the late 1990s, the Department of Health (DoH) released the results of a survey that revealed that 96 out of 100 Filipinos were afflicted by dental caries. Given the magnitude of problem, the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) urged its members to work double time while the government poured in its own resources to launch a campaign to address the problem.

Command responsibility
IN a quick response to the quick finding of the task force investigating the Ultra stampede, Eugenio Lopez III said he was responsible and would hold himself responsible "should our justice system so determine in the future." It was as if he anticipated the remark of the administration’s foremost legal mind, the justice secretary’s, that the level of liability could go as high as the Lopezes.

Clinton suggests Global Emergency Fund
YULETIDE traditional joys were eclipsed this past Christmas season by media coverage of the one-year memorial to the victims of the terrible tsunami that struck 12 countries bordering the Indian Ocean and displaced two million people, killing an estimated 183,000. Former President Bill Clinton, partnered with former President George W. Bush, were assigned by the US to visit the sites and make suggestions on alleviating the tragic effects of such disasters in the future.

(Delivered in a symposium on "The Legal Profession and Beyond: Restoring the Nobility of the Justice System" held at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium, University of Santo Tomas, January 23, 2006)

Hopeless & homeless?
(Editor’s note: The stampede on the sidewalk that killed 74 of us would not be the last as noted by the author.)

Cardinal’s birthday wish
A BREAKFAST fellowship in celebration of the 75th birth anniversary of His Eminence, Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal, Archbishop of Cebu, was held yesterday at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City.

Be my valentine?
ILL you be my valentine?

An oil-free future
SWEDEN is to take the biggest energy step of any advanced western economy by trying to wean itself off oil completely within 15 years — without building a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The Syrophoenician woman’s faith
[Jesus] went off to the district of Tyre. He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it, but He could not escape notice. Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him. She came and fell at His feet. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged Him to drive the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, "Let the children be fed first. For it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." She replied and said to Him, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps." Then He said to her, "For saying this, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter." When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

Reach out for mutual encouragement
THE base for national governance reforms is laid at the bottom of the national pyramid so as to provide solid support to the middle levels, and eventually also the top of that pyramid.

Middle class initiatives
WE used to be called petty bourgeois, bourgeois, or burgis, somewhat disparagingly. That is why I was frankly amused when a friend, member of a party-list, invited me to a forum for the "middle class."
