February is Heart Month
REPORTS by various medical institutions highlight the prevalence of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) worldwide. Cardiovascular disease is the world’s Number One killer disease today. The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted that yearly some 45 million persons die from CVD. The George Institute of International Health at the University of Sydney, Australia, in its five-year study on CVD in Asia concluded that the number of Asians who will die or be disabled by heart disease will be greater than ever, unless immediate steps are taken to implement prevention programs. A health survey conducted jointly by the Philippine Society of Hypertension and the Philippine Lipid Society has warned that heart ailments will rise among Filipinos.

Brinkmanship
MALACAÑANG’S preferred approach to difficulties is best described as "brinkmanship" as shown by the expanded version of Executive Order 464 which requires Cabinet members and other officials to get the President’s permission to testify at congressional budget hearings. This provoked senators into going to the Supreme Court for judgment on the EO’s constitutionality. As a result, the budget hearings are stalled, for which reason opposition legislators accuse Malacañang of maneuvering to have the past year’s budget reenacted, an accusation that, of course, the latter denies.

Trouble in Semirara
ON December 18 of last year, an oil spill occurred in Semirara Island in Antique when a power barge owned by the National Power Corporation (NPC) ruptured after being thrashed by waves and strong winds while en route from Masbate to San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

Learning is a life-long process (even for gov’t officials)
FOR any individual, learning in our time has become a life-long process.

Scientists and their social responsibility
SCIENTISTS have a major responsibility to the youth – to help young people enjoy, appreciate, and be excited by science. Enrolment in science and engineering courses in universities is decreasing. The downward trend may have been caused by the system of education itself, particularly in science; the low quality training of science teachers; and the low salary, social status, and recognition of science teaching.

China’s vision for 2050
BY 2050 China will have eradicated poverty, established itself as a world power in science and lifted the average lifespan of its billion-plus citizens to 80 years, according to two blueprints for the future published yesterday.

Sickness & miracles of Lourdes
THERE’S a saying, "God cures; the doctor collects the fee." We can say that to the cases of miraculous healings like those of Lourdes.

High noon in the 464 coral
AS we write this article the headline in the Bulletin reads "17 senators ask SC to rule on EO 464.’’ In a urgent motion, 17 senators led by Drilon asked the Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO), because, "the continued implementation of EO 464 will cause irreparable injury to the Filipino people since legislation and the oversight function of Congress will grind to a halt.’’

The cleansing of a leper
A LEPER came to Jesus [and kneeling down] begged Him and said, "If You wish, You can make me clean." Moved with pity, Hhe stretched out His hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will it. Be made clean." The leprosy left Him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning Him sternly, He dismissed him at once. Then He said to him, "See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them." The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to Him from everywhere.

Jonah’s thanksgiving
IT is often said that we can pray anywhere and at any time and our Lord God will hear us. Even from inside a fish, the prayer of a reluctant preacher was heard by God. The reluctant preacher I am referring to is none other than Jonah, the prophet whom our Lord God called to preach the message of salvation in the old city of Nineveh. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria, then Israel’s great enemy that conquered Israel in 722 BC
