Four persons were killed, while 10 others, including children, were wounded when a grenade held by a suspected member of a gang of holdup men exploded while about to be lobbed at a family during a drinking session yesterday afternoon in a squatter colony in Parola, Tondo, Manila.
The suspect identified as Eugine Candilasa, 34 was among the four fatalities. The others were Alex Lamyaun, 39, married; one alias "Toto" wearing a white undershirt and white short pants, about 20 to 40 years old; and Randy Gallos, 21, technician, of Area 13, Tondo, Manila.
The fatalities suffered wounds in various parts of their bodies, said SPO3 Norman Cristobal of the Manila Police District Station 2, officer-on-case.
The wounded were immediately taken to the Gat Andres Bonifacio Hospital, police said.
Initial reports said Toto, Candilasa, and Lanyaun, suspected members of a robbery gang, reportedly arrived at the house of Buhayan at North Harbor’s Gate 13, and started a drinking session between 1:20 and 1:30 p.m. yesterday.
The men, for a still unknown reason, later engaged in an argument and a fistfight with Buhayan and other members of his household, police said.
During the fight, Candilasa allegedly pulled out a still undetermined type of grenade from his pocket, and tried to lob it at Buhayan’s group.
But the one-eyed Candilasa allegedly loosened his hold on the explosive, causing it to drop to the pavement and explode.
Cristobal said four of the wounded victims included nearby children at play aged from four to 10 years. They suffered shrapnel wounds in various parts of their bodies.
"Habang nagsusuntukan, bumunot si Candilasa ng granada sa kaniyang bulsa , pero nabitawan ito at sumabog sa semento (During the fight, Candilasa got a grenade from his pocket. But he accidentally dropped it on the pavement, causing it to explode), " Cristobal said.
Police probers were conducting follow-up operations to identify the person to whom a .38 caliber revolver was passed on by one of the suspects before they were killed in the grenade explosion, and the type of grenade used by the suspects.
