National Heart Month: Puso’y Ingatan, Sakit Ay Iwasan
FEBRUARY is National Heart Month. The annual observance aims to raise awareness on how to prevent heart diseases, which have become major health problems in the Philippines. The month-long commemoration should allow us to answer truthfully how much good, or bad we have done for our heart.

Oil price increases
THOSE who seek to divide the Armed Forces of the Philippines have nothing good in mind for this nation. Our soldiers are engaged in a battle against the forces of the revolutionary NPA and they need all the political and moral backup we can give them for their mission. We call for a halt in these insidious efforts to politicize the AFP that only abet the struggle of the enemy. Our soldiers bear a strong allegiance to Constitution and chain of command and this must remain unsullied at all times.

A dubious understanding
IT looks like the senators won the fight on Executive Order 464 when the Palace announced that the President has permitted Cabinet members to attend today’s hearings on the national budget. The momentous decision was taken after a meeting with the senators during which the President "blinked" after a hasty exercise of "brinkmanship."

Comelec vacancies
WITH three vacancies in the Commission on Elections, President Arroyo is given the opportunity to redeem herself, making up for her appointment of Virgilio Garcillano, who went on to star in the Garci tapes.

The Chief Justice: Jurist and leader
(Speech delivered before the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa) during its observance of Constitution Day and the induction of the officers and members of its Board of Governors at the Manila Polo Club, Makati City, February 8, 2006)

All-out confrontation
THE President’s political party Kampi will get l95 signatures of legislators and present it to Congress as proof that there is overwhelming support for Cha-cha.

‘Buhay’ & its multi-meanings
OF all the most commonly used Pilipino or Tagalog words, buhay is easily my pet term. There are a few personal reasons – Balarila adherents and other purists may not accept them – but it is my blue-eye local expression.

The demand for a sign
THE Pharisees came forward and began to argue with [Jesus], seeking from Him a sign from heaven to test Him. He sighed from the depth of His spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation." Then He left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore.

One nation to build
WE should be clear what our priority, over-arching agen-da should be.

Mobile courts
MUSLIM leaders over the world have urged hundreds of angry Muslims protesting the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper to restrain them from threatening to go to war to defend Islam if needed and to call on fellow Muslims to show tolerance and moderation in their protests. Nonetheless, their leaders demanded that President Arroyo and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines condemn the cartoons as they consider those caricatures as an assault to the Muslims’ honor and dignity. There is no problem for our government to condemn those cartoons. All that President Arroyo can do to condemn that event, is to announce to the world of the Philippine’s displeasure in behalf of all Filipino Muslims.

Wars to avert & to pursue
PRESIDENT GMA has finally allowed Cabinet members to attend budget hearings in the Senate starting today in an apparent compromise move to avert a looming "war" between the Palace and the Upper House.
