Celebrating life, wishing for unity and peace: The pursuits of His Eminence Ricardo Jamin Cardinal Vidal
CEBU Archbishop Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal urged Filipinos to unite and move to avoid precipitating a stampede of catastrophic proportions that may bring down the whole nation, on the occasion of his 75th birthday recently. In his remarks, His Eminence, Cardinal Vidal described the recent stampede in Pasig City as a mirror image of the nation’s struggle for survival. In the heart of every individual, he said, is the same dream, the same goal, but if unregulated and unguided by due concern for others, we can only end up hurting each other.

Virtual declaration

Stand up or stand by
IT’S no secret that officers and members of Plaridel, the organization of senior journalists (Star’s Max Soliven is chairman, Inquirer’s Neal Cruz and myself are vice chairmen) will convene at Front Page at 11 o’clock this morning to arrive at a consensus on the challenge to press freedom posed by Proclamation 1017.

Test case
ITS bark is worse than its bite –that is the perception as regards Proclamation 1017.

Not easy
AT this writing, aside from the implementation of state of emergency, declared by President Arroyo last Friday, the peoples’ mass demonstration to force her to step down – it is significant to note what coup d’etat expert Edward Luttwak said in his "Coup d’Etat Practical Handbook" – (partially discussed here several weeks ago).

Massive security for Saudi oil sites
RIYADH – A failed al-Qaeda attack on a Saudi oil facility this week may have seemed poorly planned, but determined militants, boosted by experience in Iraq, will keep the key oil sector in their sights, analysts said on Saturday.

The rich man
AS Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’" He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow Me." At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

A culture of freedom
AS responsible citizens work to build a just and humane society, and as we coordinate and direct our efforts and initiatives towards the common good, we should never lose sight of the blessings we seek to enjoy.

Assurances and hope
THERE is still hope for Filipinos "if only everyone is willing to work for unity and peace," says Cardinal-elect and Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales.
