The annual trek to the US of high school students to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) has officially started with the recent proclamation of national winners who will represent the Philippines in the prestigious science fair to be held on May 7 to 13 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Winning their way to take part in the once-in-a-life time competition, announced during the national finals of The Intel Philippine Science Fair (IPSF), are ten high school students from the CARAGA, National Capital Region, and Cordillera Administrative Region.

The country’s bets for the individual level competition in Environmental Science and Zoology categories, respectively, are Jose Alfonso Casurra of Caraga Regional Science High School in Surigao City with his project, "Spirulina platensis: Potential Biosorbent for Lead," and Raymond Joseph Amurao of Marikina Science High School with his project, "Biofuels and Soap from Janitor Fish Oil."

The official team entry to the Medicine and Health Category is the project entitled, "Postsynaptic Neurotransmitter Binding Inhibition of "Opposite Leaf Spot Flower" Flower Isolate: A Prospect Agent Against Uncontrolled Neuronal Firing (Epilepsy)" by Beverly Casimero, Kenneth Joseph Bureros, and John Paul de la Cruz of Buyugan Comprehensive High School in CARAGA.

Individual contenders in the Physical Sciences are Mark Timothy Rodriguez of Claro M. Recto High School in Manila, with his project "Fish Scales Wastes from Selected Teleosts: An Innovative Sorption Materials for the Recovery of Astaxanthin," and Larry N. Caduada, Jr., a first year high school student of Baguio City Science Foundation, with his entry, "Selinene, an Organic Alternative to CFC’s as Coolant or Refrigerant."

Team delegates for Physical Sciences are composed of Ma. Katrina Guevara, Ace Fredric Palabrica, and Nicole Andrea Yazon of Philippine Science High School Main Campus in Diliman, Quezon City with their entry, "Elastomeric Grating for Wavelength Switching in Optical Communication System."

Amurao, Rodriguez and the team from PSHS Diliman are also first prize winners in the national competition of the IPSF. Top individual awardees in the IPSF also include Johann Philip Ignacio of the Integrated Developmental School of MSU-IIT in Iligan City (PC-Based Water Level Control System Using Soundcard as Analog to Digital Converter); and Mary Joyce Santos of Pinagbuhatan High School in Pasig City (The Molluscicidal Effect of Datura Metal).

Besting the rest of the team contenders are Luiji John Carlo Suarez, Cindy Villaseñor, and Rafael Frias of Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School (Selected Plant Extracts as Control Agents of Braconid sp; a Larval Parasitoid of Corcyna Cephalonica Stn.); Evangeline Mercene, Jestoni Landoy and Toni Marziet Peñafiel of Marinduque National High School (Aloe Dofineay Utilization of Aloe Vera as Feed Additive to Butterflies); and Joanne Binasoy, Joana Rose Dumag and Marie Antonette Juan of Philippine Science High School in Nueva Vizcaya (Taxonomic Identification and Selection of Antagonistic Soil Fungi on Pink Disease in Citrus).

The national competition has produced a number of ISEF grand awardees in the past, the most recent of whom are Joey Mangadlao of Agusan del Sur National High School winning the third grand award in Microbiology and Daisy Galapia of Sinait National High School bagging the fourth grand award in Botany.

Intel ISEF is the world’s largest and most prestigious science competition for high school-aged students. In the Philippines, Intel is also sponsoring the national delegation to the 2006 ISEF, as well as the IPSF organized by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), through the Science Education Institute.
