Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director-General Arturo Lomibao, top officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and leaders the Association of Volunteer Fire Chiefs of the Philippines (AVFCP) led the launching of the 2006 Fire Prevention Month in Metro Manila yesterday morning.
"Let us make every day Fire Prevention Day," Lomibao said.
The launching was highlighted by a 120-vehicle motorcade participated in by firemen, policemen, and civic leaders. It started from Binondo and Tondo, passed through Paco and Sta. Ana, Manila, and toured San Juan, Quezon City, Parañaque, Las Piñas, and Mandaluyong cities.
Lomibao was joined by BFP chief Director Rogelio Asignado, AVFCP President Armando Que, AVFCP Life Honorary President George Go, AFVFCP Vice President Alberto Sy, and Manila Councilor Edward Tan, among others.
Stressing this year’s Fire Prevention Month’s theme "Pamayanan Samasama Laban sa Sunog," Lomibao said "it is a must that the whole community must be directly involved in fire prevention, fire suppression, and protection consciousness against destructive fires -–residential and industrial or commercial – that have claimed too many lives and destroyed billions of pesos worth of property in the past."
There are about 16,000 uniformed BFP personnel, and some 10,000 volunteer fire fighters nationwide, the majority of whom belong to the Filipino-Chinese volunteer fire brigades in Metro Manila and the countryside.
