Double victory for A1GP Team France in Mexico
spacer

F1 Team France took another double victory in Monterrey, Mexico, last week racking up its 12th and 13th wins from 18 races this season.

Ace driver Alexandre Premat started from pole in both races. He was promoted to pole position in the sprint race after South Africa was penalized for a technical infringement.

The feature race had a clean first lap, with many of the teams pitting in early for their mandatory pit stop. Premat pitted-in first and executed a trouble-free stop in 51.3 seconds. Much to the disappointment of the local fans, A1 Team Mexico was not able to take part in the opening laps as their mechanics were still repairing the damage on the car after the Sprint race incident. It was only during the 4th lap that Team Mexico joined the field.

Team Brazil and Team Canada were both given a drive through penalty for a false start and speeding in the pit lane, respectively. By the end of lap eight, all but one team had pitted and the one still out in front was A1 Team USA, earning a lead of over 28 seconds. A1 Team Mexico was still suffering as their car was shown a mechanical black flag and pitted at the end of his seventh lap for repairs and retired from the race.

While A1 Team France extended its lead, there was some good battles going on behind with Switzerland, Germany and Italy involved in one and New Zealand, Austria and the Czech Republic in another.

An incident going into turn one on lap 22 between A1 Teams Indonesia and Australia saw the only safety car period of the race. Ananda Mikola’s car hit the car of Christian Jones forcing the Australian driver to retire. Mikola, meanwhile, limped towards the pit area for a new nose cone before rejoining the race.

The battle for seventh spot was a train headed by A1 Team New Zealand with Austria, the Czech Republic and Portugal fractions of a second behind. The winner of the battle was the Czech Republic who got by both Austria and New Zealand before the chequered flag came out to give A1 Team France its 13th win of the season.

With Team France’s win in Mexico, it is only A1 Team Switzerland which has a mathematical chance of beating the French team to win the first World Cup of Motorsport. It is all to play between A1 Teams Great Britain and Brazil with them having swapped places again as Robbie Kerr now goes to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca three points ahead of the Brazilians.

"I’m so happy to have won the sprint race. I made a mistake in the first chicane and Neel Jani almost passed me, but I kept control and my sprint race was trouble-free. Throughout the races, we suffered from a lack of grip. The car worked well, but it was quite demanding driving on this slippery surface," Premat said.

"The feature race was quite straight forward, though we did have some concerns that the weather might change. As part of our strategy, I was the first to pit and my team mate Nicolas Lapierre even helped change my tires! He replaced one of our mechanics, who hurt his hand. Verstappen was pushing quite hard behind me, but I maintained a comfortable gap over him. I’m happy for the team with today’s results, it was fantastic to win in front of so many of our supporters here from the French community based in Monterrey," he added.

Jean-Paul Driot, team principal, A1 Team France said, "I am very pleased with today’s double win and fantastic results in both races. Whether it’s the first win of the season or the 13th, like today it feels just as good, but the championship is not over and we remain fully focused for the next round. The pressure is still on and we will continue fighting like we have done all season."

After the ninth round of the new A1 Grand Prix series, A1 Team France has won for the 12th and 13th time and extended its lead in the championship with a total of 153 points. The next round will be staged at Laguna Seca-California, USA on March 12 where Nicolas Lapierre is the nominated driver.
