FIRST BATCH OF NURSING STUDENTS CAPPED
spacer

By CAROLINE ALMAZAN

Southville International School and Colleges–College Division welcomed the start of the school year with the foremost Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony for the third year Nursing students, held at Gym I in June last year.

Bearing the theme "Facing the challenges in pursuit of nursing excellence", the momentous event started with 94 students marching their way down the aisle of the gymnasium followed by the SISC nursing faculty, administrators and guests.

The first leg of the main event took off with the introduction of guest speaker Dr. Annabelle Borromeo, MAN. The speaker gave a lengthy and inspiring message, galvanizing the spirits of the students to be excellent in whatever they will do and to be noteworthy in the field of nursing. One of the main accentuations in her talk were the acronyms C.A.P. (Commitment, Advocacy, Professionalism) and C.A.N.D.L.E. (Competence, Accountability, Nice, Determination, Life-Learning, Excellence) "lessons which must be embedded in the hearts of the students," she says.

Presentation of the candidates for the capping ceremony and imposition of caps for females and pins for males, which was the second leg of the event, followed the speech. Taking into account the solemnity of the affair, a candle lighting ceremony took place with the Nightingle’s lamp lighted by Rosalie Billena, RN, one of the nursing faculty members.

Lastly, the students sang their capping song, then recited the Nurse’s Prayer and Nightingale’s Pledge, led by Rica Pattugalan and Marie Kirsten Meneses, respectively.

The Capping and Candle Lighting is a tradition for nursing students entering their third year of schooling.
