YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT: By JOAN SUMPIO, RND

You read it right from the title! Although literally, in our Department of Health’s National Health Events we do not have occasions that focus on cancer awareness for the months of February, July, and December.

Why is this disease eating our bodies? One possibility is that we may be asking our body to do things for which it is unprepared by the course of human evolution. We might have come too far away from the natural foods that we are suppose to be eating. Nowadays, look at what type of diets or foods are leading us to (probably) have:

• Breast Cancer has been associated from taking excess caloric and fat requirements, saturated and polyunsaturated fats from foods, and fried foods

• Colon cancer has been attributed to excess fat intake, cholesterol, polyunsaturated fats and fried foods

• Cancer of the Stomach has been related to taking excessive salt and salt-pickled foods and nitrate cured meats and also charcoal-broiled/smoked foods.

• Prostate Cancer is associated with excess fat intake, excess protein from animals and saturated fats

• Pancreatic Cancer has been linked from taking excess fats, polyunsaturated fats and alcohol

• Cancer of the liver is associated with taking moldy foods; and

• Ovarian Cancer have bee associated with excessive fat and saturated fats intake.

The above diet and cancer linkages is devastating as it seems we cannot enjoy life anymore, but there are powerful anti-cancer substances in our foods and these are Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Flavanones, Saponins, and Indoles. These may be difficult to remember but simple take the list of foods below and you’ll have a good dosage of anti-cancer substances in your diet:

• Cranberries, raspberries and other berries has ellagic acid that helps prevent cancer;

• Red grapes and green beans has flavones;

• Spinach, onions, apples and green tea has flavonols;

• Grapefruits, oranges and lemons has flavanones;

• Asparagus has folate and glutathione that may prevent cancer

• Broccoli has Indole three-carbonyl and sulforaphane that m,ay help fight and prevent cancer;

• Cabbage has compounds that may help prevent and fight cancer particulary breast, colon and prostate;

• Garlic has active ingredients that may block the growth of cancer cells;

• Maitake mushrooms may help shrink cancerous tumors;

• Sweet Pepper may also help prevent cancer; and

• Tomatoes has been linked to lower risk of prostate, breast, lung, endometrium, stiomach, colon and rectal cancer.

You have now read for yourself that cancer prevention need not be expensive. It can be as natural as you may want it to be.
