The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday that some parts of the country, particularly Visayas and Mindanao, will continue to experience rainy weather for the next few days due to the passage of a low-pressure area (LPA).
In a press conference yesterday at the PAGASA Science Garden in Diliman, Quezon City, PAGASA weather branch chief Nathaniel Cruz said tropical depression "Basyang," which weakened into a low-pressure area last Tuesday, "still threatens the entire island of Mindanao."
"As of the moment, Mindanao, especially the eastern part of Mindanao, is experiencing rainy weather conditions," Cruz said.
Cruz said rains will continue in Mindanao early today due to the passage of the low-pressure area.
By tomorrow, Friday, Cruz said the LPA is expected to be in the vicinity of Palawan. "Maaapektuhan ang Palawan, Mindanao, and Visayas. They will experience rainy weather conditions."
By Saturday, the LPA is expected to be on the western side of Palawan, Cruz said, adding that the weather disturbance is expected to be on the South China Sea by Sunday and Monday.
Cruz said however that no other weather disturbance is threatening the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) aside from the LPA in Mindanao.
The LPA, which developed into Basyang last Monday, had weakened into an LPA in less than 24 hours due to its "nearness along the equator," said Cruz.
Basyang is the second weather disturbance to enter the PAR this year after tropical depression "Agaton," which battered some parts of the country last January.
Basyang brought heavy rains for the past few days in Mindanao, eastern Visayas, and some parts of western Visayas, threatening these places with flashfloods and landslides.
