Police identified the victim as Randolf Clareto, 46, senior vice president of Nutri Plus Manufacturing based in Angeles City, Pampanga. He sustained cuts from bullet head splinters on the left shoulder and right foot and bruises in different parts of the body.

Clareto was on board a gray Toyota Vios with license plate XPA 876 at around midnight while cruising along Lanuza St., Barangay Ugong, Pasig City, when gunfire suddenly erupted, hitting him and his car.

Though he sustained gunshot wounds, he managed to drive himself to the Medical City Hospital in Pasig City for treatment.

His vehicle also bore several bullet holes.

“I just came from Pampanga and was on my way to Pasig City this evening when I was hit by bullets fired by police officers who were pursuing a group of carjackers. I would like to file a complaint,” Clarito told reporters.

In a press conference at Camp Crame, Senior Supt. Elmer R. Soria, TMG National Capital Region chief,  said prior to the incident, they received a report that a certain Bryan Joel Raymundo was driving a Mitsubishi Galant with license plate PMT-638 when he was stopped by five armed men on board a Toyota Altis with license plate XPA-876 along E. Rodriguez Ave. corner Lanuza St. in Pasig.

Some of the suspects commandeered the Mitsubishi Galant while the others drove the Altis and headed in the direction of Makati City. Upon reaching Pasay City, the suspects reportedly left Raymundo and drove the two vehicles back to Pasig City via C-5 Road.

Soria said there were at least three other carjacking incidents in Quezon City and neighboring areas that happened hours before the shooting.

Police reports said that among the vehicles stolen at gun point were a Mitsubishi Adventure, which was forcibly taken along Commonwealth Ave. at 2:55 p.m. last Tuesday, and a Toyota RAV 4 which was carjacked about an hour later near the same area.

Police also received reports that a Toyota Revo AUV was also carjacked along Mindanao Ave., Quezon City at 4:55 p.m. on the same day.

These reports prompted the PNP-TMG to deploy its patrol cars which set up checkpoints.

Soria said they received reports that five men armed with Armalite rifles on board a Toyota Altis were behind the series of carjacking incidents.

However, when Clareto, on board a Toyota Vios, was passing through a checkpoint manned by the seven TMG personnel along C-5 Road, they thought that it was the Toyota Altis that the suspects used in the carjacking.

While Soria claimed that they ordered Clareto to stop at the checkpoint, the business executive allegedly ignored them, prompting the lawmen to shoot his car.

In a radio interview, Clareto said he was not stopped by the TMG personnel so he drove past the check point until he was shot by the police team.

The Toyota Altis was later recovered by another TMG team in a nearby area but it was already abandoned by the suspects.

Recovered inside the Altis were a pair of licensed plates XCR-122, a search light, a carton bag, a magazine for Armalite, a Dunlop tennis bag, four baseball caps, two bullets for 38 caliber handgun, a pillow, tire tools, umbrella and a SIM card.
