Phone snatcher mauled
PASAY CITY: Police arrested Tuesday night a holdup suspect after he allegedly killed his victim in a busy street here. Behind bars at the Pasay City Police Headquarters detention cell and beaten black and blue is Antonio Yap (see photo at left), 34, a resident of 349 Gunao Street, Quiapo, Manila, said to be a vegetable vendor in Divisoria. Investigation by the police showed that Yap allegedly grabbed the cellular phone of Ronnie Villar, single, security guard of Zebra Security Agency, assigned to Round 3 Garment Factory along Buendia Avenue, Pasay City, at 10 p.m. Tuesday aboard a Quiapo-bound jeepney. It happened at the corner of Arellano Street and Taft Avenue, Pasay City. Witnesses said Villar and Yap struggled for the possession of the cellular phone. In the course of their fight for the phone, Yap allegedly stabbed Villar seven times. The commotion caught the attention of village watchmen and police operatives in the area. A brief chase happened, leading to the beating and arrest of Yap. Villar was dead on arrival at the nearby Manila Sanitarium. (Joel C. Atencio)

MALABON: Three motorcycle-riding men who snatched a cellular phone of a student were arrested by the operatives of the Night Watch Team of the Malabon police in Barangay Niugan. Sr. Supt. Moises Guevarra, chief of the Malabon police, identified the suspects as Elmer Vasquez, 24, student, Rafael Miranda, 20, Jeffery Anza, 24, factory worker. They were presented to the office of Mayor Tito Oreta along with the three other murder suspects linked to the murder of a graduating student who were earlier caught by the police. Investigators said the suspects earlier held up Jejomar Rada, 16, a high school of F. Nicolas St., Niugan, while he was walking along Soriano St. before midnight Tuesday. Rada claimed Miranda and Anda, who were on board a motorcycle, stopped alongside him, poked him a bladed weapon at his side, and grabbed his cell phone. He then called for assistance from his friend Elmer Vasquez who happened to pass by the area and tailed the suspects until they reached a secluded area on Magsaysay St., San Agustin. Vasquez sought assistance from the Night Watch police patrol operatives stationed in the area who chased the suspects. Police recovered the victim’s cell phone. (Ed Mahilum)
Sniff dogs mobilized
CAMANAVA: To avert a surprise attack by disgruntled groups in the Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela area, the Northern Police District brass mobilized sniffing dogs to clear different areas that are possible targets of suspected bombers. As this developed, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Chief Supt. Vidal Querol deployed some 100 newly recruited policemen in the four localities after completing their individual training in Bicutan, Taguig City. The newly recruits law enforcers which include women, will be equally assigned or deployed to the four police stations in the CAMANAVA area. NPD director Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil has assigned at least two sniffing dogs trained to locate suspicious substances or explosive materials which would assist policemen to conduct operations to different areas like malls, churches, LRT, MRT and other populated areas. Police quoted an intelligence report, that a group belonging to some disgruntled soldiers were reportedly planning to use three cars to carry out a series of bombing attacks in Metro Manila. MANILA: The city government of Manila ranked number one among the 17 Local Government Units (LGU) in Metro Manila in total revenue collection performance with P6.244 billion collected as released by the Department of Finance yesterday. Makati came in at second with P5.943 billion and Quezon City was third with P5.7 billion. The total figure is based on actual total Real Property Tax, Business Tax, Fees and Charges and Economic Enterprises Collections. "We are very proud of this achievement and we commend all Manileños who unfailingly pay their taxes as a reflection of their trust and confidence in our developmental programs as it gains are now being enjoyed by the public all over the city," Mayor Lito Atienza said. The city of Manila has introduced innovations and revolutionary measures to make the city more business friendly.
